May Day

April 18, 1917

The third year has passed since the predatory bourgeoisie of the belligerent countries dragged the world into bloody carnage.

The third year has passed since the workers of all countries, yesterday still blood brothers, and now dressed in soldier's greatcoats, stand against each other as enemies, crippling and killing each other to the delight of the enemies of the proletariat.

Mass extermination of the living forces of peoples, mass ruin and poverty, the ruins of once flourishing cities and villages, mass famine and savagery - all this so that a handful of crowned and uncrowned predators plunder foreign lands and rake in mad millions - this is where the war is leading.

And the world began to choke in the grip of war.

The peoples of Europe have become stuffy, and they are already raising their heads against the militant bourgeoisie.

The Russian revolution is the first to break through the wall that separates the workers from each other. In a moment of general patriotic intoxication, the Russian workers are the first to proclaim the forgotten slogan "Workers of all countries, unite!"

With the thunder of the Russian revolution, the workers of the West wake up from hibernation. Strikes and demonstrations in Germany, demonstrations in Austria, Bulgaria, strikes and rallies in neutral countries, growing unrest in England and France, mass fraternization at the fronts - these are the first signs of the growing socialist revolution.

And our today's holiday, the holiday of May 1, isn't this a sign that new bonds of brotherhood of nations are being forged in the streams of blood?

The ground is burning under the feet of the predators of capital, for the red banner of the International is once again hoisting over Europe.

So let today - the day of May 1, when hundreds of thousands of workers of Petrograd fraternally extend their hand to the workers of the whole world, serve as a guarantee of the birth of a new, revolutionary International!

Let the slogan "Workers of all countries, unite!", Which has been heard today in the squares of Petrograd, spread throughout the world and unite the workers of all countries in the struggle for socialism.

Over the heads of the predators of capital, over the heads of their predatory governments, let us extend our hand to the workers of all countries, proclaiming:

Long live May 1!

Long live the brotherhood of peoples!

Long live the socialist revolution!
